We all love music regardless of the genre; metal, R&B, rock, pop or rap. The only trouble with most earphones is that you can still hear the outside world. No matter what your music choice is, you clearly want to hear it rather than background chatter or such like which is why you should invest in a pair of noise blocking headphones.

Most headphone brands will make a version of noise suppression headphones; they come in both in ear and over the ear designs and they all vary in price and style. Which type you pick is down to your personal tastes and needs.

As well as being able to reduce the external sound levels you hear, they are also good for your overall hearing health. The trouble with standard earphones is that you need to increase the volume to drown out the background noise and this can have a detrimental effect on your hearing in the long run. It’s not good for you and highly annoying to others around you too.

The function of noise suppression headphones is to cancel out as much of the external sounds as possible. This can be done in two ways; the first is the cheaper option and is known as passive noise reduction or PNR for short. The second and more expensive option is active noise control or ANC.

PRN is the simpler of the two as well as the cheaper alternative. This method reduces sound waves entering your ear canal by the use of an in ear device that has a foam or pliable surround that fits snugly into your ear canal and thus making it harder for sound to enter or leave. You can then play your music at a lower volume and not be bothered by troublesome external sounds.

The more complex version is the ANC models. This technology works by cancelling out external sounds by means of a microphone. This variety is very popular with airline pilots and other professionals who are constantly surrounded by on-going loud noises.

The microphone takes in the surrounding sounds and these sounds are then reversed so that they are the opposite of the noises that are being generated in your environment. This new sound is then played into the ear and is able to cancel out the external sounds. To believe it you need to try it but as bizarre as the method sounds it really does do the job.

The PNR earphones will be much cheaper than the ANC ones but they will probably not cancel out as much as the more expensive variety will. Also it is often the case that a better brand name will most likely produce a far superior pair than one of the smaller less well known brands.

Both types of noise suppression headphones can cancel or block a lot of external sounds but not all. There is no way to stop it completely; it’s just a case of finding the rights ones for your needs.
